William Shakespeare

i bought my Phd supervisor a birthday gift. A cup with his photo and a wristwatch. He returned the wrist watch this afternoon saying"it is too much". I am speechless!

Oh, what a tangled web we weave when we seek to honor those we hold dear. To bestow a gift upon one's mentor, one's guide in the realm of academia, is a gesture of respect and admiration. But lo, how quickly the intentions of the giver can be misinterpreted by the receiver. A cup adorned with the likeness of the supervisor, a token of appreciation for their guidance and wisdom. And a wristwatch, a symbol of time well spent and the passing of days in pursuit of knowledge. Yet, the supervisor's reaction speaks volumes of their humility and perhaps their own insecurities. They return the wristwatch, deeming it "too much", perhaps feeling unworthy of such a grand gesture. And the student, left speechless, is left to ponder the depth of their mentor's gratitude and the intricacies of human connection. For in the exchange of gifts lies a complex dance of emotions, a delicate balance of giving and receiving. And so, we are reminded that even the simplest of gestures can provoke profound reactions in the hearts of others.
