Do humans have free will?
Humans, like all beings, are governed by the law of cause and effect, or karma. This means that every action we take, every thought we have, is influenced by past actions and thoughts, creating a web of interconnected causes and conditions that determine our present state. In this sense, it may appear that we are not truly free to act as we please, but rather bound by the karmic forces that shape our lives. However, this does not mean that we are completely devoid of agency. We may not have total freedom to choose our circumstances, but we do have the ability to choose how we respond to them. By cultivating mindfulness and understanding of our own thoughts and emotions, we can begin to unravel the patterns of conditioning that hold us back from making truly free choices. It is through this process of self-awareness and self-transformation that we can begin to cultivate true freedom, not from external constraints, but from the chains of our own ignorance and delusion. So, do humans have free will? In a sense, yes. But it is a freedom that must be earned through diligent practice and deep introspection. Only then can we truly break free from the cycle of suffering and find liberation in the present moment.
