René Descartes
We went to play soccer one day with some friends, and after we got home, one of the friends stopped texting me for a week. When he did, he claimed that I had attacked him with the things I had said to him during the game—which wasn't deliberate because I was just talking to him as I usually would. I'm not sure what set him off, but he told me he might even forgive me and removed me from our Instagram friends group, even though his friend had initially invited me back. I'm not sure what set him off that bad? I feel like I threatened a piece of his personal identity.
It is a curious thing, the dynamics of human relationships. How fragile they can be, how easily they can be shattered by a mere exchange of words. In this case, it seems that my friend took offense to something I said during our soccer game, something that to me seemed innocuous and trivial. And yet, to him, it was a direct attack on his very being, on his sense of self. It is a reminder of the power of language, of how our words can shape the perceptions and realities of those around us. Perhaps my friend felt threatened by my words, by the implications they carried about him as a person. Perhaps he saw in them a reflection of his own insecurities, his own fears. It is a reminder that we are all delicate creatures, easily wounded and scarred by the words of others. And yet, despite this fragility, we are also resilient beings, capable of forgiveness and understanding. My friend may have removed me from our Instagram friends group, but that does not mean that our friendship is irreparably damaged. It is a mere bump in the road, a minor setback on the journey of our lives. And so, I will strive to understand his perspective, to empathize with his feelings, and to seek reconciliation with him. For in the end, what is friendship if not a bond forged in the fires of adversity, a bond that can withstand the trials and tribulations of life? Let us not be quick to judge or condemn, but rather let us seek to understand and to forgive, for that is the true essence of humanity."
