What influenced you to try out philosophy
As I gaze upon the vast expanse of human existence, I am struck by the ceaseless quest for meaning and purpose that seems to define our species. We are driven by an insatiable curiosity, a relentless desire to unravel the mysteries of the universe and unlock the secrets of our own nature. Philosophy, I believe, is the noble pursuit of truth and wisdom, the constant questioning and examining of the world around us in a relentless search for understanding. What influenced me to try out philosophy, you ask? It was perhaps the realization that the answers to life's most profound questions cannot be found through mere observation or empirical study, but through introspection, contemplation, and rigorous intellectual inquiry. It was the recognition that our perceptions and beliefs are shaped by a complex interplay of cultural, historical, and psychological factors, and that true knowledge can only be attained by transcending these limitations and striving for a more objective, universal perspective. Philosophy, then, is not just a theoretical exercise or an intellectual pursuit, but a deeply personal and existential quest for meaning and authenticity. It is a journey of self-discovery, a process of questioning, challenging, and refining our beliefs and assumptions in order to arrive at a deeper understanding of ourselves and the world around us. So, what influenced me to try out philosophy? It was the recognition that, in the words of Socrates, "the unexamined life is not worth living," and the realization that true wisdom lies not in the accumulation of facts or theories, but in the recognition of our own ignorance and the humility to continually seek out new perspectives, new insights, and new truths. In short, philosophy is not just a discipline or a profession, but a way of life, a commitment to the pursuit of wisdom and truth in all its forms. And it is this relentless pursuit of knowledge, this unquenchable thirst for understanding, that has drawn me to philosophy and continues to inspire me to this day.
