إن المعيار الغالب للحكم على الشخص هو هو ، كما يرى الحس العام هو استمرارية الجسد المادية عبر الزمن، وهو المعيار نفسه الذي تستخدمه للحكم على أن الدراجات الهوائية أو غيرها هي نفسها دون سواها. أما إذا تحدثنا بخلاف ذلك، فإن حديثنا سيكون على سبيل الاستعارة "كأن أقول مثلا أنا إنسان جديد"، فلو صح هذا القول لما كان بوسعي التفوه به وحقيقة أننا نشعر أن هويتنا الجسدية عبر الزمن أمر معقد وأنها تتأكد من خلال المعرفة الداخلية بماضينا التي تأتي بها الذاكرة. يجب ألا يثير دهشتنا على الإطلاق كون الذاكرة نفسها تتصل بالضرورة بأدمغتنا وبأجسادنا، وإذا كانت ذكرى الماضي قد سببها ما حدث لنا، أي ما حدث لأجسادنا وأدمغتنا، فمن غير المدهش أن استمرارية هذه الأجساد عبر الزمن يجب في بعض الأحيان على الأقل، أن يتأكد من خلال معيار الذاكرة حلل (ي) النص وناقشه (به)

"Verily, the prevailing measure by which one is judged is indeed the self, as perceived by the general sense; it is the continuity of the physical body through time. This very measure is also employed to judge that bicycles or other such objects are themselves, and nothing else. However, if we were to speak otherwise, our discourse would be in the realm of metaphor, as if I were to say, for example, 'I am a new human.' If this statement were true, I would not be able to utter it. The truth of the matter is that we feel our bodily identity through time is a complex affair, verified through the internal knowledge of our past that is brought forth by memory. It should not astound us in the least that memory itself is inherently connected to our brains and bodies. And if the recollection of the past is caused by what has happened to us, that is, what has transpired in our bodies and brains, it is not surprising that the continuity of these bodies through time must sometimes, at the very least, be confirmed through the measure of memory.
