It should be done in a way that does not blame the other, but simply acknowledges that things have changed and that the relationship is no longer what it once was.

The other person should be given the time to express their own thoughts and feelings, and to have their say. Spare not the words of comfort, but offer them in kind and loving way. Speak of the good times that have been shared, and that the parting is not a sign of any ill will.
